On Thursday (6/2), Fasilkom UI held an open session for the conferment of doctorate in Computer Science for Herwanto. The session was held in the Auditorium of Fasilkom UI with the dissertation titled “Sistem Pengenalan Pola Citra Mammogram, Data Individu dan Patologi untuk Identifikasi Penyakit Kanker Payudara” (A Pattern Recognition System of Mammogram Image, Individual, and Pathology Data for Breast Cancer Diagnosis).
In this research, the researcher discusses the method to automatic mass segmentation and analysis of mammogram for classification of benign and malignant tumor. The selection of mass candidate is carried out through 2 phases: marking the suspected mass area using adaptive threshold p-tile technique and marking the connected components; and texture feature extracting on the ROI. The feature extraction is performed by First Orde Statistic, Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrices (GLCM), and Grey Level Run Length Matrices (GLRLM). The classification algorithm based on association technique is applied to mass segmentation. The application captures a mammogram image as an input and displays the presence of suspicious mass and its margin. The information will then be used to help doctors clarify tumor classifications. Based on the conducted study, the developed algorithm is able to localize the suspected area and therefore it is able to detect the shape and edge of mass on mammogram.
The session was led by Mirna Adriani, Ph.D with Prof. Dr. Ir. Aniati Murni Arymurthy, M.Sc. as promoter and Dr. drg. Indang Trihandini, M.Kes. as co-promoter. The examiners assigned for this session were Prof. Belawati H. Widjaya, Ph.D., Dr.Eng. Wisnu Jatmiko, Hisar Maruli Manurung, Ph.D., M. Ivan Fanany, Ph.D., and dr. Fery Moertopo, Sp.Rad. The dissertation succeeded to get high-distinction score of 3.45, and Dr. Herwanto was then conferred as the 29th Doctor in Computer Science from Fasilkom UI.
