Friday, 20 April 2018, Fasilkom UI organized a seminar for candidate students in master and doctoral programs faculty of computer science UI, in the Auditorium Fasilkom UI Depok. The seminar was aimed for candidate students of S2-MIK (Master of Computer Science) and S3-DIK (Doctor of Computer Science); the event becomes a discussion channel and hub to meet candidate students with their candidate lecturers and Research Laboratory Teams. Master and doctor computer science study program are closely linked to research actitivities. Therefore, the involvements of candidate students of master and doctor of computer science become compulsory in this event.
The year 2018 seminar is the fourth round since its initiation in 2014. The only yearly event is organized by the Fasilkom UI to meet the needs of candidate students of master and doctor over the entire UI faculties. Recalling back since the inception of the event in 2014, the responses toward this event have been great and enthusiastic, over 120 candidates enrolled in to attend the seminar, they came from all over Indonesia from Java Island and outside the Java Island (Sumatera, Sulawesi, Kalimantan). The event includes exposures about study program in master and doctor of computer science, motivation on candidate students on their study plan, many presentations from research of Fasilkom UI laboratories, discussing sessions and lab tour.
Seminar was opened by Dr. Petrus Mursanto, Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, with Head of Master and Doctoral Programs in Computer Science, Prof. Wisnu Jatmiko and Manager of Research and Community Services UI, Dr. Adila Alfa Krisnadhi. The other invites were Head of Lab/Lab Representative: Setiadi Yazid, Ph. D.; Harry Budi Santoso, Ph. D.; Eko Budiardjo, Ph. D; Indra Budi, Ph. D; Dana Indra Sensuse Ph. D; Ivan Fanany, Ph.D; and Betty Purwandari, Ph.D.
Besides obtaining depth of information about S2-MIK (Master of Computer Science) and S3-DIK (Doctor of Computer Science), candidate students also obtain knowledge and insight about research interest. There are 7 research laboratories in Fasilkom UI under a number of latest topics in Computer Science and Information Technology field of studies. They are:
- CNAHPC Lab (Computer Networks, Architecture & High-Performance Computing Lab),
- RSE Lab (Reliable Software Engineering),
- IR Lab (Information Retrieval),
- E-Gov&Buss Lab (E-Government & E-Business),
- MLCV Lab (Machine Learning & Computer Vision),
- IM Lab (Information Management),
- DL2 Lab (Digital Library & Distance Learning).
The research laboratory is not only a place to carry out research, but also a place to conduct scientific discussions, result scientific papers and facilitate researchers to gather and brainstorm ideas with the other fellow reserachers who have the same vision in research. Students and lab members will be guided and directed according to their research interest to come out with the idea solutions to problems in community. In the other words, science and knowledge possessed can be translated to a real contribution to the world.
Research Laboratory in Fasilkom UI has adequate facilities to support students research activities. This is including research grants, managed by the research laboratory which some of them come from Directorate General of Higher Education, Reasearch and Technology, Universitas Indonesia, Internasional Collaboration, etc. Going along with vast development of science, Fasilkom UI Research Laboratory formed research collaborations, that is inter faculties (multi disciplines), with industries (generating product), with the government (generating services) and with overseas universities. Output of Research Laboratory can be also in forms of scientific publications (internasional and national journals), intellectual property rights (patent, copyright), books (textbook, monograph, book chapter, lecture note), or else prototype.
Particularly for the doctoral program, candidate students are required to prepare their study plan carefully. It is recommended that research interest and chosen topics when taking doctoral program, are topics that is whole-heartedly passionate by the researcher. “Research conducted in the future during doctoral study will consume time, perseverance and endurance. It is so much better if research topic undertaken aligning to vision and passion of the researcher (student),” stated Prof. Wisnu Jatmiko in a Seminar of Master and Doctor of Computer Science (MIK DIK) in Fasilkom UI.
