Tuesday, November 24, 2015 SDM IPTEK coaching and development foundation, which was established by Prof. Dr. -Ing. B.J. Habibie, organized a bestowal of XVII Habibie Award 2015 at Perpustakaan Habibie & Ainun, Jakarta. B.J. Habibie appreciation for the achievement of the nation’s young people was given in the forms of medals, charter and scholarship for domestic doctoral degree. This program has awarded Habibie Award to 50 participants since 1999, and to 87 doctoral scholarship receivers. XVII Habibie Awards 2015 achievers are Prof. Dr. Nina Helina, M.S. in Social Science, Prof. Emr. Drs. Abdul Djalil Pirous di in Cultural Studies, and Dr. Eng. Wisnu Jatmiko, S.T., M.Kom. in Engineering Science.

Wisnu Jatmiko is the Manager of Research and Public Service in FASILKOM UI. At the age of 41, Dr. Wisnu is still active and productive as a researcher in Information Technology. The problem arousing in daily basis often motivates Dr. Wisnu in his works and innovations in his area of interest. One of the problems is the traffic in the capital city, Jakarta. Dr. Wisnu with his team have made it to build a distributed traffic system. This traffic light system will change as the traffic condition in the environment. Besides, his interest in robotics has encouraged him to create innovation. An algorithm working to search gas source is a brilliant idea belongs to this graduate from doctoral program in Nagoya University, Japan. This algorithm is installed on sets of robots which will help humans in detecting areas of gas source.

Another field explored by Dr. Wisnu is health. Motivated by the limited number of cardiologists and USG experts in Indonesia, Dr. Wisnu and his team considered to start utilizing the little hands in medical field, such as midwives who have successfully reached the rural areas in Indonesia. With his partners from FK UI, Dr. Wisnu established a telehealth system to detect the heart (EKG) and USG equipment. This telehealth system was made to be easily accessible from wherever. The recorded data through the heart detector, for example, can be directly forwarded to the cardiologists to get a result clarification. Meanwhile, USG equipment, which until this time is still developing, was planned to be able to examine the real-time condition of the fetus. These two telehealth technologies will also be combined to be accessible online. These innovations are expected to help the midwives in performing their works.

Dr. Wisnu’s contributions are not only in research field. He is also an active lecturer in FASILKOM UI. He admits that his participation in conducting researches is not apart from the helps and supports of his fellow scholars from the S1, S2, and S3 programs. Therefore, what a pride that he gets if he can see his students or other students participating in his research are capable in their areas of interest. “I keep on struggling to motivate them (students) to always work hard, pray, and ask the blessing from their parents to achieve their dreams”, said Dr. Wisnu in his presentation. Dr. Wisnu’s support for his students is also given through a chance to get a connection with his partners overseas. Through seminars, visits, or conference held under the responsibility of Dr. Wisnu, his students get the chance to publish an international journal, such as through ICACSIS (International Conference on Advanced Computer Science and Information Systems), which is held by FASILKOM UI every year.

In his presentation, Dr. Wisnu also said “There are three essential things that people should learn and understand to be smart and successful. They are time to rest, to study, and to socialize. Smart and successful people are the ones who allocate more time to study to be excellent, and because they realize the importance of maintaining connections with others, they will also have more time to socialize. Therefore, since the time is more allocated for studying and socializing, they have to deal with less time to rest. All in all, whatever we want to do, if we are determined, we must be aware that there are also sacrifices.”
