Knowledge management is an effort to utilize information and the available technology within an organization effectively and efficiently. One of the many sectors that require knowledge management is the health sector. A good knowledge management in health industry will help to improve patients’ security, diagnoses accuracy, and healthcare quality, as well as reducing health costs in general.

However, mental health sector in particular has yet to apply knowledge management. This is unfortunate especially in today’s era where the high rate of population growth and the rising social and economic needs have confronted people with more pressures than ever. These pressures affect mental health greatly. Statistics show that the number of mental illness sufferers in West Java rocketed up significantly in 2013 while the 2007 Indonesian Basic Health Research shows that the country suffered approximately Rp. 20 trillion worth of economic loss in 2007 due to mental health problems. Mental health, therefore, is becoming more crucial than ever, and an effective knowledge management in this sector is necessary to cope with the problems.

Based on this situation, Siti Rohajawati, a student from Fasilkom UI Doctoral Program, wrote a dissertation titled “Model and Strategy of Mental Health Knowledge Management” which discusses the implementation of knowledge management in mental health sector. Siti also uses soft system methodology (SSM) and ethnography to design mental health knowledge management (MHKM), clinical experts, process & cycle, organizational knowledge and structural component models. Moreover, the dissertation suggests a MHKM system along with its effective implementation strategy which is important to reach the goals of an organization.

The dissertation was presented on July 27, 2015, in Fasilkom UI Auditorium. The session was led by Mirna Adriani, Ph.D. and invited Prof. Dr. Aniati Murni Arymurthy as promoter and Dana Indra Sensuse, Ph.D. as co-promoter. Five examiners were present at the session, including Prof. Dr. Engkos Koswara Natakusuma, Dr. Eko K. Budiardjo, Yudho Giri Sucahyo, Ph.D., Dr. A. Nizar Hidayanto, and Dr. Indra Budi. At the end of the session, Dr. Siti Rohajawati graduated cum laude as the 48th graduate of Fasilkom Doctoral Program and was conferred a doctorate in Computer Science. (SA)
